Teeth Cleaning

It’s A Good Time for a Spring-Cleaning

The change from Winter to Spring kicks off with a good spring-cleaning. While for many this means going through closets and organizing clothes, clearing out the garage and storage space, sweeping out the cobwebs and clutter inside and outside your domicile. But don’t forget, your house isn’t the only thing that deserves freshening up…your oral care should front and center.

It’s always a good time to put your attention on your dental hygiene. Here are some tips and advice you should pay attention to:

Refresh Your Toothbrush

The American Dental Association recommends getting a new one every three to four months (or sooner if the bristles are frayed). But make sure you are using the right toothbrush for you. It might be time for an upgrade.

  • Consider Softer Bristles — Firm or even medium bristles may make it feel like you’re getting a more thorough cleaning, but they can actually do more harm than good. Brushing too hard can lead to loss of enamel and receding gums. Protect your teeth by opting for softer bristles.
  • Step Up Your Technology — Electric toothbrushes have been proven to clean more thoroughly than manual brushes. The vibrations or rotating movement provide a more thorough cleaning with every pass—a feature especially beneficial for those with limited mobility

Clean Your Toothbrush Holder

When was the last time you cleaned out your toothbrush holder? The container you keep your toothbrush in is exposed to all the same germs and bacteria as your other bathroom surfaces.

Don’t put your new toothbrush into the old container until you clean it thoroughly. Wash it in warm, soapy water, wipe it down with disinfectant, or run it through the dishwasher once or twice a week to keep your toothbrush and your mouth clean and sanitary.

Replace Expired Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Did you know that even oral health tools, like toothpaste and mouthwash, have an expiration date? Most mouthwashes and toothpaste include a number of ingredients to ensure adequate cleaning, fluoridation, and to avoid plaque buildup and freshen breath. Each ingredient helps determine whether a product is still active.

Make sure to use  toothpaste that contains fluoride to help strengthen the enamel of teeth. Mouthwashes are also available with fluoride but, be cautious of choosing mouthwash with alcohol if there are young children in the house.

Make Sure You are Flossing

How often do you floss? Floss is important to ensure healthy gums and you should plan on flossing every day.

When you get your new toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash, pick out a packet of floss for even better oral health results! Floss is available both waxed and unwaxed. Waxed floss makes it a bit easier when you’re starting out as it helps to glide easily between teeth. Floss comes in different flavors and colors to keep you motivated as you build your new, healthy habit.
